Most ingredient trends arrive with a lot of noise and not much to back them up. Banana sap is different. This one started on a beach, not a marketing meeting. More on that here.
What Is Banana Sap, Exactly?
Tano's banana sap comes from Musa balbisiana, one of the wild ancestor species of the banana plant. It's a clear, liquid pulled from the pseudostem, the part of the plant that does the heavy lifting: supporting growth, moving nutrients, and protecting against stress. Traditional medicine across Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa has used banana plant extracts for generations to help wounds heal and calm irritated skin.
At Tano, we've put many varieties of banana sap through independent third-party testing to see what it does to skin at a cellular level. The results changed how we approach formulation and is changing the skincare game.
What Does Banana Sap Actually Do for Skin?
In short, it supports collagen production, strengthens the skin barrier, reverses UV damage, and calms inflammation.
Collagen support. In lab testing, banana sap boosted collagen production by 324% compared to untreated skin cells, while retinoids tested under the same conditions came in around 80%. It also helped skin make more of the structural protein that keeps it firm, and cut back the enzymes that break collagen down over time by over 50%. In other words, it helps skin build more collagen and hang onto it longer.
Barrier strength. Banana sap helped strengthen the skin's outer barrier, the layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out. It encouraged skin cells to bond more tightly together, sped up the skin's natural repair process, and reduced the kind of low-grade inflammation that slowly wears the barrier down.
Calmer, less reactive skin. For anyone dealing with redness, sensitivity, eczema, or rosacea, banana sap showed a calming effect, significantly reducing markers linked to inflammation and overreaction in skin.
Not a surface-level ingredient, banana sap works with the skin's own signaling systems instead of overriding them.
So Why Is It Going Viral Now?
A few things are happening at once. People are tired of harsh actives, retinol purging, and over-exfoliating, and are realizing that a wrecked barrier is usually the result of doing too much. There's real demand for ingredients that work without the irritation.
The science is also easier to find. Social media and the internet have enabled us to become more informed consumers, who want to understand why something works.
And it occupies a rare spot: centuries of traditional use plus a growing body of modern clinical evidence. All of this means that banana sap's collagen numbers and science are easy to get excited about.
